Disability Rights Arkansas (DRA) believes that addressing conflicts of interest is an essential element of advocacy on behalf of others. We embrace numerous and complex standards to that effect as regards staff, administration and board activities. These standards are expressed in writing and are reviewed annually.
A conflict of interest arises when there is a clash between personal interests (e.g., financial gain) and professional duties or responsibilities for the welfare of another. Such a conflict can occur:
- When the concerns or objectives of two different parties are incompatible; or
- When a person is in a position to derive personal gain from actions or decisions made in their official/professional capacity.
The key principle in avoiding conflicts of interest is the disclosure of potential conflicts.
